My School

I attended St Bede's Grammar School. I was keen on photography. I made prints in the school darkroom, and sold copies for 3d each to class mates.

Move to Edinburgh

I left school in 1963. I moved to Edinburgh in 1963. I found the architecture very different from Bradford.

'Standard Life'

I began my first job in 1963, working as an Actuarial Student for Standard Life. I worked for the company until my retiral, 40 years later.
This is how the imposing front entrance of Standard Life's Head Office looked, around the time that I joined the company.

Standard Life later opened a new Administration Office at Tanfield, Canonmills, then moved its Head Office to a new site at 30 Lothian Road, on the corner of Lothian Road and the Western Approach Road

'Edinburgh Photographic Society'

I joined Edinburgh Photographic Society on my arrival in Edinburgh, and visited many of their International Exhibitions of Photography, held each summer in Edinburgh. The society has held International Photography Exhibitions each year since its foundation in 1861.

Since 1990, I've been spending more time researching the history of photography in Edinburgh. I wrote a couple of booklets on:

Around 2000, I decided to create a web site to hold my research, so that it could be shared with a wider audience,
