Top 40 Pages
There was quite a lot of movement of pages
up and down the 'Top 40' chart in September, but there were only two new entries
into the chart.
'Early Photography' and 'Edinburgh
Recollections' both made significant progress up the charts. I also looked
at the 'Top 500 pages viewed during September and found that these included:
- 16 different pages on 'Early
Photography'
- 99 different pages on
'Recollections'.
2. Sessions and Pages Viewed
There were:
- 676,961**
sessions in September (6% more than in August).
- 963,872
pages viewed in September (7% more than in
August).

a) How many Sessions were there in September 2013?
Each time a person views the EdinPhoto web site, it counts as a session.
Stats for sessions and pages viewed above
are taken from Matrixstats, a statistics package provided by my web site host,
FastHosts.
Each month in recent years, Matrixstats has
been reporting a large number of sessions with '0 pages viewed' -
often about 70% of all sessions. Why has this been happening?
I've now found the reason.
These reports of '0 pages viewed' refer to
occasions when Google, Bing, Image-Search, or similar sites have been searching
the EdinPhoto web site, looking for images.
From now on, I intend to exclude such searches from the
monthly statistics that I report. So, the stats for September 2013 become:
- 200,380
sessions
- 963,872
pages viewed
- Average session = 4.8
pages

per month come through Search Engines?
In 2003, soon after I launched the
EdinPhoto web site, about 30,000 visitors per month were being referred to the
web site by search engines.
Now, in 2013, about 85,000 visitors per
month are being referred to the web site by search engines.
b) Which Search Engines
refer viewers to the site?
The dominance of Google (and, to a lesser
extent, Yahoo) in recent years can be seen from this table.
It shows the % of visitors that have been
referred to the EdinPhoto web site by each search engine during the month of
