Do you know a John Peat, Edinburgh, 1856?"

eBay

I had a look, out of curiosity, to see if there had been any bids on the German eBay site for this Daguerreotype, but unfortunately, I was not able to find it.

Perhaps the auction has ended, or perhaps I was looking in the wrong place.

UPDATE:  I've now found it.  See Reply 2 below.

John Peat

There was an amateur photographer in Edinburgh named John Peat active in the mid-1860s.  Might he have been the man in the Ross & Thomson Daguerreotype?

All I know about him is that:

-  He gave four talks to Edinburgh Photographic Society in 1865-66.

-  He entered work in the Photographic Society of Scotland Exhibition in 1865.

"I was reading your comments saying you couldn’t find it on eBay in Germany....its still there 50 Euros.  All I did was put details in the eBay search box and there it was.

Thanks Winnie.  I found the photo straight away when i looked for it today!   I just put Daguerreotype into the search field on the German eBay site.

If my understanding of German is correct, it appears that the picture has a starting price of €50 + €16 postage, but there have not yet been any bids for it.  The auction closes at 16.12 today.
