On the back of one of their early photographs of Calton Hill, taken from Edinburgh Old Town, Ross & Thomson advertised:

 National Monument or 10 Greenside Street, Edinburgh

Ample Instructions, Apparatus and Chemicals 

may be had on moderate terms.

 

1850s

In an advert placed in the 1853 Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directory, the Edinburgh lithographers Schenck & McFarlane illustrated examples of some of their work.  These examples included the following advert for Ross & Thomson:

Ross & Thomson, like several other Edinburgh photographers, began to place adverts in The Scotsman in the early 1850s.  Here is the earliest that I have found:
