The dress in this 1864 photograph is even larger than those that featured in cartes de visite from John Ross' Princes Studio, studio a few years earlier. 

Cartes de visite would normally be ordered by the dozen or half-dozen.  Here are two copies of the same photo, but mounted on differently coloured  backs.

Please also see the John Ross Studio Addresses page to read about the backs of his cartes de visite.  The example here suggests that the colour of printing on the back of a John Ross carte de visite may not be very helpful in determining the date of the photograph.
