American Photography

American Photography was a monthly publication of  about 60 pages per month.  This was one of the  photographic journals that Edinburgh Photographic Society subscribed to for several years after setting up a library in its new premises in 1892.

I have studied the 1910 and 1911 editions of American Photography, initially  selecting these years to see what was recorded of William Crooke's tour of the USA.

The 1911 editions of this journal are described as Vol V which suggests that it was first published in 1907.  I have found no publisher's name and address on the journal, but the journals ended with a section titled:  'Camera Notes - Organ of the Camera Club of New York, 121 West 68th Street' so this club may well have been instrumental in publishing the journal.

The ownership of this journal changed, often, in the early years.

Scope of the Journal  in 1910-11

American Photography was very well illustrated.  The journal gave advice on both creating and processing the photograph.  Articles published in 1910 included:

-  Practical Retouching for Amateurs

-  Night Work with the Camera

-  Photographing Fireworks

-  Photographs from the United States National Museum including photos of the pioneers of photography, LJM Daguerre, WH Fox Talbot (by Moffat), JN Niepce, and of two exhibtors in PSS Exhibitions in Edinburgh in the 1850s, HP Robinson and OG Rejlander..

Events in North America and Europe were reported.
