Edinburgh Castle from the Vennel

The Vennel is a narrow lane, that runs beside the grounds of George Heriot's School., connecting the western end of the Grassmarket to the higher ground, previously known as High Riggs, to the south.

The book, Modern Athens, published in 1829, reported on the difficulty in reaching the 'top' of the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle from this part of Edinburgh and places to the South.  It added:

"However, the 'George the Fourth's Bridge', now in the course of being constructed will remedy the inconvenience. ... The foundation stone of this structure was laid in the month of August 1827."
