The Forth Bridge

 under construction

Thank you to:

-  Ray Norman for sending me Photo 1 above, view from North Queensferry.

-  Frank Hay for sending me Photo 2 above, view from North Queensferry.

Both the photos above have similar captions including the legend:

Photographers

John & James Patrick

There were two photographers

  -  John Patrick (1831-1923) and his son

  -  James Patrick (? - 1933)

Some of their photos and postcards bear the name 'John Patrick' or 'James Patrick'.  Others like these two just have the initials, 'JP', but I believe that the photographer would have been John Patrick for the reason given below.

John Patrick had studios in Fife and Edinburgh.  In the Edinburgh studio, he was joined in partnership by his son, James, from 1890 onwards. (I don't have any studio addresses for James Patrick working alone.)  The Forth Bridge was completed in 1890, so the photos above would have been taken some time earlier, presumably by John Patrick

Photographic Studio on Hawes Pier

Frank Hay observed when he sent Photo 2 to me:

"There was a photographic studio, probably being used by Peter MacGill,  beside the lighthouse on Hawes Pier when the Forth Bridge opened.  It can be seen, beside the lighthouse on this magic lantern slide by  George Washington Wilson:

but it cannot be seen in Photo 2, taken around 1887, above.
