John Moffat Cartes de Visite

possibly of

Famous People

John Moffat Portraits

David Cress tells me that he recently acquired a group of cartes de visite  by John Moffat and a few other Edinburgh photographers.  He believes that these are likely to be of famous people, but he has only been able to identify two:

 -  Sir James Young Simpson, and

 -  Dr Thomas Stuart Traill, Professor of Medical Jurisprudence at the University of Edinburgh

David tells me that his cartes de visite were stored in an early-1900s postcard album.  He believes that they were collected for the significance of the sitters, rather than being family portraits.

Here are four cartes de visite from this collection of photos.  David tells me that Moffat used the same style of pose for other known images of famous people.

Please email me to let me know if you recognise any of these men, then I'll pass on your message to David.  Please click on the images below to enlarge them.

Edinburgh University

It seems likely to me that some of the above photos may be of men who were associated with the University of Edinburgh.  I have seen several examples, including portraits of Dr Duncan and Prof Syme.  Some of these have been sold by Weddel, South Bridge, Edinburgh (near the University).
