Location

Calton Hill

R ock House, situated at the base of Calton Hill, about ¼ mile to the East of Princes Street, was the home to many renowned photographers, beginning with Hill & Adamson in the 1840s.

The photograph above shows Rock House in the 1870s, with a large sign advertising Archibald Burns on the wall of the low building in front of the house.  Calton stairs, leading to Calton Hill, with the gate into the garden of Rock House are on the right hand side of the photograph.

In the next photograph, a calotype by Hill & Adamson, DO Hill is standing beside a gate, maybe the gate to Rock House, maybe elsewhere. I have heard different opinions on this topic.
