Reunion

2013

I was pleased to receive a message, earlier this week, from Peter Hamilton who wrote:

Reunion

2013

"I'm writing on behalf of some folks who went to  St Margaret's church in the Dumbiedykes in the 1960's.

We are holding small reunion in September 2013, and would like to hear from anyone who went to the church, especially the youth organisations during that period.   Trying to find people after such a period of time has so far proved to be difficult.

The contact person for the reunion is David Patrick, Edinburgh."

Boys' Brigade

6th Company

"Peter Hamilton has asked me to provide information on the Boys' Brigade, 6th Company that used to meet at St Margaret's Church, Dumbiedykes.  Please see below.

Locations

"The Company, was at a few locations and finally settled at St Margaret's Parish Church, Dumbiedykes in 1921.  It remained there until it went into abeyance in 1958.

It restarted in 1962 and it carried on until the closure of St Margaret's in 1969."

Football

"It was never a big company, but it had plenty life about it. The company took part in in various local BB competitions and it excelled at football, winning a few trophies.

Classes

"The Company ran classes in:

-  First Aid

-  Semaphore

-  Arts & Crafts

-  Physical Training

-  etc.

it also held fund-raising events and it helped out on occasions with church functions.

Outdoor Activities

The Company held annual camps under canvas. and there was also a Lifebuoy Team that later became the Junior Section but that wasn't too serious - more fun than anything else."

Meetings

"The Boys' Brigade Meetings were held in the Church Hall, and on occasions in Milton House School in the Canongate (now the Royal MIle School).

Merger

"In August 1969 it merged with

'The 2nd Edinburgh BB Company'

and became

'The 6th (Kirk o' Field Parish Church) Company'.

The Company carried on, I believe, until 1985 when it was disbanded.

Is Anybody Out There?

"We are looking for former officers and boys. Lifebuoys and members of the Junior Section.
