Thank you to Hilary Luder for allowing me to reproduce these photos of a Cabinet Portrait from the studio of James Howie Jnr, Many of the Cabinet Portraits that I have seen have been undated and the sitters have not been identified, but this one had had a date written on the back and five of the six students, including Hilary's great great uncle have been named. Hilary wrote: |

Edinburgh Medical Students 1880 "I found the EdinPhoto web site while looking for information on my great great uncle, John Robert Holmes who studied medicine at Edinburgh university at the same time, more or less, as Arthur Conan Doyle, Stevenson and Barrie, though Stevenson is a good few years older so I am a little skeptical about that! Both Doyle and my uncle were born in 1859 and, if the photo is to be believed studied medicine at about the same time. My uncle lead an undistinguished career as a Home Counties GP. He was one of the earliest doctors to eschew the use of leeches as a treatment. He was often heard to be treating those in need who could not afford to pay." Hilary Luder, August 18, 2013 |
