D Hermiston Smellie and John Campbell Harper were in business together in Leith from 1899, but separated in 1908, each established their own business. Some of Harper & Smellie's cartes de visite used the address Edinburgh; others used the address Edinboro. |

I have seen an attractive cabinet print by Harper & Smellie entitled: "Tea Party at Tain - 1904". This was an outdoor scene of 2 gentlemen and 4 ladies, one of them pouring the tea. The examples below seem somewhat less artistic, making use of a studio backdrop with no camouflage where it meets the floor and a single chair:
