Pyramids

Charles Piazzi Smyth had a keen interest in the Pyramids.  He took photographs inside a pyramid of Gyzeh with his miniature camera, and carried out meteorological experiments there.

He gave lectures on the subject to Edinburgh Photographic Society in 1869 and again in 1872.  These were:

Much of the literature on Piazzi Smyth's photography covers his photography of the pyramids with his miniature camera.

He took photographs both inside and outside the pyramids.  Here is one of his photos of the exterior.

What is known of this photo?  When was it taken?  With what camera?  Is it one of a series?  How many in the series?  I (and the owner of the slide) would be very interested to discover more about this image.

How many photographs were there in Piazzi Smyth's pyramid collection.  Slide no. 31 (above) is the highest number I have seen for any of his slides.

Five more of Piazzi Smyth's slides in apparently the same series as above were sold on  the eBay Auction Site today [29 May 2003] for a total cost of £42.  The slides each measured 3.25 ins x 3.25 ins.

The mounting was very similar to the one illustrated above.  Most were hand-coloured.  The numbers on four of the slides were 12, 15, 17 and 22.  The fifth slide was not numbered.  So No 31 (illustrated above is still the highest numbered of this series that I have seen).
