Charles Piazzi Smyth was born in Naples, son of English amateur astronomer, surveyor and antiquary, Admiral William Henry Smyth, . 

Charles Piazzi Smyth was named after a Sicilian astronomer. 

Piazzi Smyth was the uncle of Baden Powel, founder of the World Scout Movement.
