Photographs were expensive in the 1840, but by 1860, the number of photographers had increased and prices had fallen to become far ore affordable.  The  'cartomania' craze (for collecting cartes de visite) had begun.

Daguerreotypes

"The daguerreotype was sold as the logical successor to the long established miniature painting and, as a result of it high price, it originally sold to the same strata of society ...  a cased quarter-plate portrait selling for twice the average skilled man's wage."

Ambrotypes

1850s

"With the large number of studios competing for business, prices and quality varied considerably.

Some photographers would charge as little as 1s and this may have included a cup of coffee for the sitter while the photograph was being developed and fixed.

Among the better photographers, prices were from 2s 6d to 5s depending on the size of the photograph.  Frames or cases were extra."

Kenneth McLeay RSA, an exhibitor in  PSS Exhibitions in Edinburgh charged high prices in 1859,  his cheapest and most expensive portraits being:

-   Plain Photo - 1st size:  1/2 guinea (=10s 6d)

-   Painted photo - 4th size  in uniform or highland dress - 10 Guinea (=£10 10s)
