Message 1

from Oldham Photographic Society

Chris Widdall (Oldham Photographic Society Archivist) wrote:

150th Anniversary

"I've been researching early Photographic Societies, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Oldham Photographic Society, which we will celebrate on 16th May 2017. We won't be striking a special medal like Edinburgh did (I was one of the lucky recipients!!!) and we can't have an exhibition of any size in the town, so I am writing a short "history book" to mark the occasion.

Oldham PS has met continuously since its foundation in 1867, through two world wars and without change of name and we are still going strong. I am archivist for the society and we have records going back continuously to 1867.  Some of our history is on our
oldham photographic web site

Does Edinburgh PS have any records relating to Oldham PS?  In the late 1860s, Oldham exchanged prints with other societies, including Glasgow and the Philadelphia Society of America."

Christine Widdall MPAGB EFIAP FBPE: 7 August, 2016

Reply to Chris

I read all the Edinburgh Photographic Society Minutes from the mid-and late-1860s (about 20 years ago now) and cannot recall seeing any mention there  of exchanges of prints between the Edinburgh and Oldham societies.

Message 2

from Oldham Photographic Society

Thank you to Chris Widdall (Oldham Photographic Society Archivist) for writing again. Chris wrote:

Meeting Places

"The first meeting of Oldham PS, which was to found the society, was Thursday 16th May 1867 at the Hare and Hounds in Yorkshire Street and the meeting place that first few months was the Hare and Hounds Inn.

At the first AGM, 5th December 1867, it was clear that some members didn't like meeting in a pub, so they decided to meet at Bartlam's Rooms in Horsedge Street for the next six months.

For some reason (not specified in the minutes) it didn't suit, and after two months, they gave Mr Bartlam three shillings and sixpence in lieu of notice and the March meeting was at  Walker and Woolfenden's Gallery, but by September 1868, they had returned to the Hare and Hounds.

In 1870 they moved to the Mutual Improvement Institute in Henshaw Street. There were several more moves after that!"
