Below
are two early tintype photos, in rough gold-coloured pinchbeck
frames. These photos give no photographer's name or date on the
back.
These photos,
including their frames measure about:

2 3/4 ins. x 3 1/4 ins. (TOP PHOTO)
-
3 1/4 ins. x 3 3/4 ins. (BOTTOM PHOTO)
The
deterioration of the image can be seen in the first of these photos,
with rusting metal showing through the image in places.
In
the second photo, the frame is showing signs of heavy use.

The
book 'Victorian Photographers at Work' includes several examples of tintype
photographs, including one (on page 78)
very similar in style to the photograph of the small girl above. The
caption in the book refers to the photo and its likely date:
"A little girl ... , an opportunist picture
taken by an unidentified itinerant photographer c.1875, probably using a camera
with internal processing facilities."
