Cross and Antlers

The arms of the Canongate, a cross set between antlers can be seen mounted high on the front of the church in this photograph.

It is said that this represents the legend of a stag at bay that was withheld from attacking King David by the appearance of a Holy Cross or Holy Rood.

The King is reported to have built the Abbey Church of Holy Rood as a thanksgiving.
