Edinburgh has a large number of closes, many leading off the Royal Mile.
Closes were narrow passages that led between the high
buildings on either side.
White Horse Close was on the northern side of the
Royal Mile, near Holyrood at the foot of the Canongate. This
was wider and flatter than the closes to be found higher up the
Royal Mile.
White Horse Inn
There was also a White Horse Inn, the
destination of some of the old stage coaches from London, but I think this may
have been higher up the Royal Mile, near St Mary's Street.
