O A Goll, Barber

Above is a photograph of O A Goll, barber's shop at 28 Raeburn Place.  The photo was taken in October 2009.   The Otto A Goll, barber's shop has been at this address since 1930 or earlier.

Here is a view from inside the shop, looking out into Raeburn Place.

Thank you to Jim Irvine who wrote

1960s

"I've just shown these pictures of Goll's Barber's shop to my cousin.  Years ago, in the 1960s, she used to come into the shop with her father.

At one time she declared: 'I want to do this job', only to be told 'No you don't, it's a dirty job!'.

She is now a hairdresser with her own business and has been for the past 37 years!!!

Little Change

I also remember Goll's hairdressers from the 1960s.  I came to Edinburgh in 1963 and lived near Stockbridge then, so frequently passed the shop.

I don't think the the interior of the shop or the shop front has changed very much over the past fifty years!

The Three Men

Here, we zoom on to the photo to take a better look at the three men.

I'll try to visit Otto at his shop in Stockbridge next week, and see if he can tell me anything about this photo.

I visited Goll's Barber's shop at Stockbridge to let the present barber and owner of the shop see these two photos.

The Goll Family

-  There are no longer any Goll family members involved in the barber's business at Stockbridge.

-  The business was originally opened in 1896 by Otto A Goll.  It then passed to Otto's son Ernest C Goll.

-  The next owner was Ernest's son John Goll.  Following his death, the present owner took over the business, having already worked there for four and a half years.

Old Shampoo Advert

Here is an old Otto Goll advert for his Shampoo Powders.  I don't know the date of the advert.
