Unloading Herring at Newhaven

Newhaven

The Western side of Newhaven Fishmarket still faces onto the small Newhaven Harbour, but there have been changes on the eastern side.

Here we look at boats on the eastern side of the Newhaven Fishmarket.   This photo was published in The Scotsman on January 2, 1953.

A long breakwater was later built between the lighthouse at the entrance to Newhaven Harbour and the, seen here, within Leith Western Harbour.   This part of Western Harbour has now been reclaimed.  It is  now (2009) a car park, and the area nearby is being redeveloped as housing

This photo was sent to me by Walter Lyle Hume.

'Gratitude'

"Here is  is a photo of 'Gratitude', having just unloaded a full cargo of herring,

My uncle also owned one of these boats.  We were sent down for a bag of fish (large), all the way down to the harbour - no bother, but coming back up the Cut ... !

The only other photo that I have of 'Gratitude' is in Anstruther Harbour after landing a record catch."
