Aerial View of
United Wire Works
An early aerial view of United Wire
Reproduced with acknowledgement to Simmons
Aerofilms Ltd (who took this photograph),
United Wire Works (who used it on a postcard) and Malcolm Cant (who
provided a copy of the postcard)
of United Wire Works, Granton
The site where United Wire Works was built lies
about a quarter of a mile inland, to the SW of Granton Harbour.
The area was occupied almost entirely by industry
when this photograph was taken with buildings belonging to United Wire
Works, storage tanks and railways.
The only housing is on the short street leading
from the bottom-right corner of the picture to the entrance to United Wire
The rectangular building at the top of this
street (under the word 'Films' on the watermark) was the former
Madelvic Car Factory.
The factory later to become part of United Wire
Works and is now (in 2006) being used as
Edinburgh Waterfront Development.
This aerial view was used on the front of a postcard produced for
United Wire Works. Here is the back of the postcard.
A Later Postcard
Here is a later version of the same postcard with United Wire Works'
buildings occupying an even greater proportion of the land.
e-mail me to let me know if you can estimate the dates of these two
