JB Cartlidge

Question

Below are references to photographers named J B Cartlidge (or in one instance, Cartridge) based in

-  Fife  -  north of Edinburgh

-  Dunbar  - east of Edinburgh

-  Hawick south of Edinburgh

-  Guisboro - North Yorkshire

-  Edinburgh

Do all these refer to the same photographer, or was there more than one J B Cartlidge?

See below for further details of each of these photographers.

Studios

Fife

JB Cartlidge had studios in  Kirkcaldy, Fife from c.1859

 [Fife Family History Society]

Dunbar

JB Cartlidge may be the same man as Cartlidge, partner of Mr Mackay in Dunbar, East Lothian, c.1865.

Hawick

Mr Walker set up in business as a photographer in Hawick, in the Scottish Borders in July 1866.  He was in business 1866-67, and employed:

-   C Collie as Manager

-   J B College who would be in Jedburgh four days a week (and in Hawick at other times?).  He was taken to court by his employer over default of payments.

Guisbro

Thank you to Ron Cosens for showing me a carte de visite from JB Cartlidge, Guisbro.

Guisbro (or Guisborough)  is in North Yorkshire.

I don't know when J B Cartlidge was based there.  Ron Cosens estimates from the style of the carte de visite that it is likely to be within a few years of 1870.

I have not found JB Cartlidge listed as a photographer in any of the Trade Directories, but I have seen the advert below on the back of one of his cartes de visite.

Artist, late partner and principal artist

 to the Edinburgh Photo Company.

The address on  J B Cartlidge's cartes de visite was sometimes
1 Hanover Street ,  sometimes  Hanover Street - Princes Street.

Some of his cartes de visite gave the studio name: Edinburgh Photographic Gallery which was based at 1 Hanover St, 1866-69.

I believe that his Edinburgh cartes de visite may have been produced around 1870.

Cartes de Visite

Thank you to Ron Cosens for sending me two JB Cartlidge cartes de visite.  I found the backs of these to be informative.  Here they are:
