The Photographic Convention

of the United Kingdom

Edinburgh

1892

Background

Photographic Conventions were held in a different location each year.  The 1892 Convention in Edinburgh was the 7th event.  Conventions continued to be held annually, except during the 1st World War, until about 1930.

The 1892 Convention was held in the hall of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in Queen Street, Edinburgh.

One contributor to the BJP in 1892 predicted:

“A hundred years hence, a Convention will be held to which Members would proceed on flying machines, 25,000 Members being present.”

In 1892, Alexander Ayton junior, was Vice President of Edinburgh Photographic Society.

He produced a memorable photo of more than 100 members of the Photographic Convention of Great Britain, on their visit to Edinburgh, posed against the rocks in Princes Street Gardens.  Click below to see the photo.
