Prospect Terrace

Location

PROSPECT TERRACE was a short street on the western side of St Margaret's Church, linking Prospect Place to the Balconies at Lower Viewcraig Row.

The view above looks to the south along Prospect Terrace towards the steeply-sloping Prospect Place and beyond to Prospect Street.

The thumbnail image below shows St Margaret's Church at the southern end of Prospect Terrace.

Prospect Terrace from the north, and the side of St Margaret's Church ©

This photograph is of  Prospect Terrace.  This was right next to Lower Viewcraig Row.  You can see the church on the left side of this photo.

This was the spot where the bride and groom came out of the church to a waiting car.  We were always there for the "pour oot"

The groom would throw money out of the car as it took off.  What a scramble to get some.

Houses facing St Margaret's Church

One of the houses facing St Margaret's Church in your photo, I think, could have been a shop a long time ago.

The house with the paintwork frontage, I'm sure, is where the Whiteheads lived  I remember George Whitehead.

There was a grocer's shop a couple of doors along, then Salteri's where you could buy sweets off the penny tray, etc.

This shop faced the hill called Scotchies

The large photograph above was one of several dozen taken in 1959 by Adam H Malcolm in the Dumbiedykes area of Edinburgh.  These photographs were taken shortly before the houses were demolished.  Adam H Malcolm donated these photographs to the Edinburgh City Libraries in the 1960s and they can now be found in the Library's Edinburgh Room Collection.
