Date
The Scran web site gives a
date of April 1956 for this photo, but Steven Oliver has written to tell
me that it must have been take between 1959 and 1966.
Steven commented: |
1959-66
"I would query the date given for this
accident. Two clues are given in the photo:
- The bus provides the main clue as it was new
as one of a batch of 50 in 1959 for the 1/21 circle route, and it was sold
in 1966 along with the remaining 47 in the batch (two having been lost in
accidents) for further service in Northern Ireland when service 1 was
converted to double-deck operation.
- The lamp post in the background provides the
other clue. The type of lantern that it carries dates from the
late-1950s when Edinburgh introduced sodium lighting.
I'll see if I can find the correct date for
you."

"This bus remained in service until April 29,
1962 so the accident must have happened between 1959 and that date.
The actual date was Tuesday April 26, 1961.
The Breakdown lorry in the background is Nos
6 FWS 853 running on trade plates 190 SG."
