Lady Stair's Close leads from the Lawnmarket, near the top of the Royal Mile, to the north, past Lady Stair's House, now the Writers' Museum.
Lady Stair's House was built in 1622. The house is named after one of its later owner, Elizabeth, widow of John, 1st Earl of Stair. She died in 1731
