James Gillespie's High School for Girls

This James Gillespie web site includes a time line for the school, from 1726, (when James Gillespie was born) until 2003 (the bicentenary of the opening of the first James Gillespie school).

In the 1950s, a new James Gillespie school was built at Bruntsfield, incorporating Bruntsfield House.  Thank you to Graham Marshall for sending me a photograph of the site and his comments on the site.

Ice House

"Here is a photo of the ice house that was discovered when the new  James Gillespie’s High School for Girls was built in the 1950s.

It was quite amusing as the local kids all knew it was there, under the hill, but none of the professionals believed us.

It was photographed before being destroyed to make way for the foundations of one of the hideous brick classroom blocks which also destroyed the woods around Bruntsfield House where we played in the 1950s."
