Where is it?
This is one of a large collection of
photos taken by Robert Blomfield in Edinburgh between 1956 and 1967.
Robert's brother, John is in the process of scanning and cataloguing the photos.
He'd like to discover where this
photo was taken. If you recognise the location,
please email me, then I'll pass on the news to John.
Thank you

Is it Easter Road?

Might this photo have been taken at
the southern end of Easter Road, beside Royal Terrace Gardens. I'll
check next time I'm in the area.

Update
There's now no need for me to check. Alan Wilson has identified the
correct location in his 'Reply 3' below. Peter Stubbs, Edinburgh: March 16,

There is certainly a high wall at
the eastern end of Drummond Street, as this photo taken in 1975 shows. The
wall is part of one of the old Edinburgh City Walls, the Flodden Wall.

Thank you to Alan Wilson for sending a quick reply, and reaching a different
conclusion from the two suggestions above. Alan has supported Photo 8a
below, a view
from Google Maps.

The second shot below from Google maps

Agreed
Thank you Alan. The evidence you have provided certainly satisfies me,
including the style of stonework in the wall, with 10 rows of stone up to the
level of the lintel above the gate, then a further 19 rows of stones, in both
photos.
Even the tree on the right in the Google image looks like a good match for
the tree in the earlier image, considering that the two photos were taken almost
fifty years apart.

I visited North West Circus Place on
the morning of 18 March and took Photo 8b below from about the same position as
for Photo 8. In fact, it was from about a couple of yards away, but the
pavement slabs and the hole in the wall at the top of the old drainpipe can be
matched in both my photo and the Google Streetview photo 8a above.)
The weather was cold
- about 0oC with wind and rain. (There appear to be raindrops
on the lens in both my photo and the I may return later when the weather
is better, and try to get a better match for Photo 8. If I wait for a
while I may even find be able to include a pram in the photo! |

Where is it?
Stockbridge
Thanks for your comments, Douglas. However we seem to have just
about come 'full circle' with this one. When I first saw this picture I
thought it might be Abbeyhill, near the Tech School.
See 'Reply 1' above.
However, it soon became clear, with a lot of evidence to support it, that the
photo was in fact taken at North West Circus Place, Stockbridge.
See Replies 3, 4, 5 above.
