Questions

What are these Vehicles?

This photo comes from a collection of glass plate negatives that were held by Edinburgh Corporation Transport Department.  Most of the other photos in this collection are of trams.

What is know about the vehicles in the photo at the top of this page?  To me, they look rather like the sort of vehicle that I used to make out ot Meccano!

Where and when might the photo have been taken?

I beleive that the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary Carnival used to be an annual event.  I have seen other photos taken at parade in 1927

and at the Hospital Charities Parade in 1922.  But when might the photo at the top of this page have been taken?

"I always thought this photo was taken in Holyrood Road.

In the photo there seem to be two gas containers with a small building on the right hand side."

Gas Containers

The two gas containers mentioned by John can be seen close to the right-hand side of this map, halfway down the map.

"Check out Alan Brotchie's book 'Wheels around Edinburgh'. This picture is in it.

The vehicles were known as 'three-wheeled tructractors', or dumper-trucks as we would know them."

Where  might the photo have been taken?

"The picture was taken in the Queens Park just past Holyrood and Lochview Court, where Dynamic earth is now."

Comment

Where  might the photo have been taken?

Both John Dickson and Graham Carlin identified the same two gas containers in the background of this photo.

-  John assumed that the the photo had been taken, looking to the SE from Holyrood Road.

-   Graham identifies it as having been taken, looking to the NW from Queen's Drive in Holyrood Park.
