Broken Gravestones

Engravings in the upper picture

The symbols engraved on the broken gravestone in the top picture include:

-   a skull and crossbones, reminders of the mortality of man

-  a horizontal hourglass, denoting a life cut short.

Engravings in the lower picture

The broken gravestone on the right is one of several in this graveyard that featured a head on top of the headstone at one side and a skull at the other side.
