Darling's Regent Hotel

Waterloo Place

The front of the Postcard

This view looks from the East End of Princes Street, beside the GPO, to the East down Waterloo Place towards Calton Hill.  Alex A Inglis, who published this card lived at Rock House, immediately beyond the furthest building on the left hand side of the road in this view.

The back of the Postcard

This postcard was posted (for a penny = £0.004) from Edinburgh to Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia on 15 January 1909.  It appears to have taken about a month to reach its destination.  There is the feint impression of a frank mark from Toowoomba, dated 18 February 1909 on the front of the postcard.

The postcard above was sent by a Margaret B Murray.

Niall Scott, has connections to the Darling family and has been researching the history of Darling's Regent Hotel.

"Darling's Hotel was a temperance hotel.

The sender of the postcard above would probably be Margaret Brown Darling Murray.  She was James Darling's second daughter and lived in Australia.

Next time you are in Edinburgh Central Library with time on your hands have a look at  a small book entitled James Darling of the Regent Hotel - a Biography (ref YDA 1820 D22 ).

It took me about an hour to read but was most enjoyable and you will discover some of the other things he did .  The darlings also owned a hotel at 11, South St Andrews Street, where the Job Centre now is, I think."

Thank you to Niall Scott for emailing me to tell me more about his research into the history of Darling's Hotel.

Niall wrote:

"It appears that Darling's Hotel was started by James Darling in1863.  It remained open as a hotel until April 1976.

The Darlings also had a hotel 'St Andrew's Temperance Hotel' in South St Andrew Street.

This page on the ElectronicScotland web site has a copy of 'James Darling - A Memorial Sketch'."
