The Postcard

Here is an early postcard in the Castle Series from the Edinburgh publisher, George Stewart & Co.

The publisher's name does not appear on the front or back of this card, other than in the advert on the side of the tram passing in front of Register House at the East End of Princes Street.

This view looks to the east along Waterloo Place towards Calton Hill and the Nelson Monument.

The General Post Office on the corner of Waterloo Place and North Bridge is at the extreme right of the picture, above the tram.

The Postcard

This postcard was posted, with a Queen Victoria 1d stamp, from Edinburgh to Hamburg, Germany on Christmas Eve, 1900.

The sender writes:

"This is a Grand City.

Have come through for the day.

Tomorrow, we go to Bowling.

Saw Carl on Saturday."

Bowling is at the western (Glasgow) end of the Forth and Clyde Canal.

A Later Postcard

George Stewart & Co used this same picture on another postcard a year or two later.  This card leaves less space for the message, but the Post Office's rule that only the address (and no message) was to  be written on the back of a postcard ended in 1902.
