General Post Office and Waterloo Place

Postcard posted 1902

This card was posted on 3 Aug 1902.  It has an undivided back.  The message is written on the front and the address on the back.

This card is described as 'Castle Series'.  No publisher's name is given, but it appears to be part of a series of cards published by George Stewart & Co of Edinburgh.  Note the advert on the tram in the lower right corner.

George Stewart & Co is reputed to have been the first company to produce picture postcards in Britain   [DPP].

Stewart & Co was established by George Stewart (b.1834, Dundee) in 1879.  The company produced a series of postcards of views of Edinburgh in 1894.  These had small views printed by process block in the top-left corner of the cards.

Here is an earlier postcard published by George Stewart & Co.  This postcard uses the same photograph as above but leaves more space for the message to be written on the front of the card, as was the case with the smaller postcards (court cards) that were published between 1895 and 1899.
