The Gleaners

"One of the cards is listed as "The Reapers".

It's actually a French painting entitled "The Gleaners".

It depicts French peasant women "gleaning" grain after the harvest is over. I only happen to know this as it's my mum's favourite painting."

The Gleaners

Thank you to GM Rigg for sending the comments above.

This card was published by Misch & Stock's and was printed in Prussia between:

-   1902 (the first year that postcards were printed with a dividing line on the back) and

-  1904 (the year that this card was sent through the post, on 2 February).

The card is numbered '105 in Misch & Stock's "Millet's Masterpieces" series.   The caption on the front of this card reads:

"Millet's Masterpieces  -  The Reapers"

--------------------------------------

However, despite this caption on the card, I agree with GM Rigg's comments.  This painting  appears on many Internet pages including this Wikipedia page which includes a thumbnail image of the picture and the following description:

The Gleaners

"The Gleaners (Des glaneuses) is an oil painting by Jean-François Millet completed in 1857. It depicts three peasant women gleaning a field of stray grains of wheat after the harvest.

The painting is famous for featuring in a sympathetic way what were then the lowest ranks of rural society; this was received poorly by the French upper classes."
