The View

Here is an attractive lithograph, looking towards the centre of Edinburgh from the south, with the Firth of Forth just visible in the background.

this view includes the following, from left to right across the centre of the picture:

-  Edinburgh Castle on Castle Hill at the top of the Royal Mile

-  Spires including Tolbooth St John's Church

-  The 'Crown' tower of St Giles Church in the High Street

-  Nelson Monument and National Monument on Calton Hill

-  Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat (823ft) in Holyrood Park

Questions

Richard Wright who sent me this lithograph writes:

"The dimensions of this lithograph are 46 x 26 cm.  The signature reproduced on the bottom left  states:

'Waller H. Paton, R.S.A. 1882
Banks & Co. Lith.'

I am interested in knowing whether it is an 'original' lithograph or a lithographic copy of a painting.  If it is an original lithograph then is it part of a series?  If it is a lithographic copy of a painting then where is the painting?"

If you can help to answer Richard's questions, please e-mail me and I'll pass your message on to him.  -  Peter Stubbs:  April 5, 2007
