The National Monument on Calton Hill

This engraving is by T Dick after G Kemp.  It was published in London c.1840.

It shows the National Monument on Calton Hill, partially completed.  It was proposed to finance this monument by public subscription from throughout Scotland, but the funds were soon exhausted so the monument was never completed.

The building in the background is the Observatory, also on Calton Hill.  It is still used today [2004] by amateur enthusiasts from  the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh
