"The
Centenary of Hermitage Park Primary School
comes up in May 2010. We
have been trying to find early photos of
it, but with very little success.
The school arrived
from Germany as a flat-pack kit, which I would have thought
was of interest in itself.
It was greatly extended, I think
in the late-1920s.
It also was used for troop accommodation of some kind
in WW2.
Does
anybody know of any early photos of 'Hermie'?"

"I
attended Hermitage Park School from January 1938 through to
January 1945
Regarding the presence of Army Personnel during World War
II, I can't say, that I ever saw any
military presence in or around the
school during the war. The explanation
may be in the following.
At
the beginning of the War, the 'Old Manse',
at the top of Lochend Road South, was being used as an annex by
Hermitage Park School, for 1st Year
pupils.
At
the beginning of the war, the 'Army Pay
Corps Services " took over
'Strangs (Coupons) Business Premises',
on the corner of Hawkhill Avenue and St. Clair
Street.
The Pay Corps
Personnel, were Billeted on the golf
links at Craigentinny. I think
some were also billeted in Craigmillar Castle.
So, if they were also
billeted in the 'Old Manse'
building at the top of Lochend Road
South, the Hermitage Park Annex, that would give rise to the story
of the Army occupying the school
premises."

Eight Year
Olds
"This photo was taken circa
1940. That would make us kids at least eight years old. I'm
found in the middle row, fifth from the left, the kid with the 'comb
over'. I attended Hermitage Park School from January 1938 to January
1945."
