William Kyles

Professional Photographer

William Kyles

Studio Addresses

William Kyles started his career as part of the Kyles & Law partnership and ended it as part of the Kyles & Moir partnership.  In between, he appears to have been trading under his own name.

In 1865-66 William Kyles opened a studio under his own name and also continued to trade under the name Kyles & Law.

Fuller details are given in the table below, and are consistent with the date on a carte de visite that I have seen.  It is dated 12 April 1866 and gives the name Kyles & Law and both their addresses: 206 High Street and 33 Bath Street.      (Thank you to Archie Foley for showing me this cdv.)

Studio Dates

*.  The last year that the address, 206 High Street appeared in the trade directories for Kyles & Law was 1866.  However, I have a carte de visite from Kyles & Law showing both this address and 33 Bath Street, dated July 29 1867.

**  William Kyles' address in Bath Street, according to the Trade Directories was No 33 (until 1876) then No 34.  However, he seems to have been using No 34 in 1874 or earlier.  Archie Foley, Joppa, has shown me a photograph of the Presbyterian Church in Regent Street, Portobello, taken before its fire in 1874 that bear's the photographer's name and address:  William Kyles, 34 Bath Street

William Kyles

Move to Ayr

William Kyles last appeared in the trade directors under his own name, as a photographer in Portobello in 1877.  He continued to appear under the name of the partnership 'Kyles & Moir' for a further five years.  (See the table above.)

However, it appears that for at least part of this time, WS Moir would  have been carrying on the business without the help of William Kyles.

William Kyles had moved to Ayr in the west of Scotland, and had a studio there, at 29 Newmarket Street, from 1880 until his death on April 29, 1886.

Here is a Kyles carted de visite from his Ayr studio, probably taken around 1890:

Following William's death, his business was continued by his wife, Elizabeth, first from the same address until 1893, then from various private addresses into the 20th century.  [D R Torrance]

In 1914, there was a business, Kyle Photo Company, based at 2 Victoria Road, Ayr.  Was this a continuation of the same business?

(Thank you to Archie Foley for showing me this cdv.)

Kyles & Moir

Kyles and Moir individually, and later Kyles & Moir together, produced cartes de visite of women dressed in Newhaven fishwives’ costume.  Kyles also produced carted de visite of men dressed in uniform.  In 1868, he advertised:

THE NEW CABINET PORTRAITS for Albums and Frames.  Beautiful ENAMEL CARTES, Full Length or Vignette.  Copies taken from Oil Paintings, Engravings, Drawings, Photographs, Marble, Bronze &c. Busts and Models enlarged or diminished.

Parties in the district visited for Landscape and Portrait Groups.  CHILDREN’S PORTRAITS receive Special Attention, and are so arranged as to produce Pretty Pictures as well as Pleasing Likenesses.  All orders executed with the greatest promptitude and care.
