Evaluation of Correspondence

The Scottish Society for the History of Photography (SSHoP) announced in May 2005 that they had submitted an application for a Lottery grant to fund the first stage of a project to record the correspondence of D O Hill.

This stage will be to evaluate what correspondence still exists and where it is located.

This project has the support of:

-  The National Galleries of Scotland

-  The National LIbrary of Scotland

-  The Royal Scottish Academy.

Transcription of Correspondence

The second stage would entail far more work.  This would be to transcribe the correspondence and to make it available on the internet.

D O Hill was Secretary to the Royal Scottish Academy for almost 40 years.  His correspondence should provide a good insight into some of the artistic aspects of life of Scotland in the nineteenth century.

Glasgow University already has considrable experience in recording correspondence in recent years, including:

-  Whistler Correspondence (a project led by Nigel Thorp).

Talbot Correspondence (a project led by Larry Schaaf).
