Officer with Medals

Ancestors

"I have been  tracing my Scottish ancestry recently, and studying my great-grandmother's photo album, trying to discover the identities of the individuals.

This photo, from her album, is of an officer with several medals on his chest, one a very large 7-pointed star.

It might be General William MacBean.  One branch of my family is the MacBean clan so that might be possible.  I have compared it to a photo of General William MacBean when he was older, but I'm not certain it's the same man."

Question

Medals

"This photo was taken between about 1864 and 1871.  Do you recognise this uniform and/or the medals?  I believe the 7-pointed star is the Order of the Medjid.  I'm not certain how many people received that medal.  He may also be sporting a Victoria Cross."
