Art Photographer

Adam Johnstone Cooper began his business as Art photographer in 1900.  In 1901, Cooper & Durie, Art photographers was established.

Cabinet prints bore the address:

Cooper & Durie,  18 Newington Road or

Cooper & Durie,  Newington Studio, 18 Newington Road or

Adam Johnstone Cooper & Durie, 18 Newington Road.

From 1917, Cooper & Durie had premises at 33,34 Fettes Row - an address which was to be used for a joint enterprise with David Stevenson from 1918.

I have a Cooper & Durie post-card, a portrait of a young child.  The address on the back is Cooper & Durie, Bo'ness and Edinburgh.  Bo'ness lies on the Firth of Forth to the West of Edinburgh.

I have seen just one cabinet print by Cooper & Durie  -  see below.

1901

Cooper & Durie first appeared in the Edinburgh & Leith trade directories in 1901.  Their first Edinburgh studio was at 18 Newington Road.

In previous decades, photographers had usually produced their studio portraits in one of two formats:

-  smaller:  cartes de visite, from 1850s until around 1900.

-  larger:  cabinet prints, from 1860s until very early 1900s.

1902

The photograph above is a cabinet print from Cooper & Durie's studio.

Thank you to Oz Rinning, Balerno, Midlothian, for sending it to me.  Oz tells me that the portrait is of his grandmother, taken on her 21st birthday in 1902.
