Photographic Societies Robert Armstrong was born in Edinburgh in 1818 or 1819. He became a PSS Member from 1857. He exhibited 3 frames, each with 12 cartes de visite, in the 1864 PSS Exhibition. |

Professional Photographer Robert Armstrong was a professional photographer at 63 Princes Street for ten years from 1855 to 1865, then at 75 Princes Street for a further two years. He is recorded in the 1861 census as living at 63 Princes Street with Jane Ferguson, his domestic servant, then aged 80. [Census: 1861] |

In many cases the photographer cannot be identified,, but here the name and address appears on the back of the photo when it is removed from the mount. This also reveals the method of mounting the photo into its pinchbeck metal mount.

In the picture above, you can see the frame structure. As you see the oval metal surround has marked the photo but it cleans up well in Photoshop."
