The Cash Books gives a useful record of the society’s early days.  For the first few years from 1861,all members joining the society and paying their subscriptions are individually named in the Cash Book.

The 1st Annual Report on 4 December 1861 spoke of:

"EPS Council’s pleasure in congratulating the Society upon its very great prosperity.  There had been a steady influx of Members during the first year, and by December 1861 the society had seventy Members"
