Bernard's Well is situated on the South bank of the Water of Leith, beside
the footpath from Stockbridge to Dean
monument was designed in 1788 by the portrait and landscape painter Alexander Naysmith
(1758-1840). Alexander Naysmith was father of the amateur etcher and
painter, James Naysmith (1808-1890).
Hill knew James Alexander
Naysmith. In fact, it has been suggested that it might have been
Naysmith rather than Brewster
who introduced Hill to photography. [Sara
statue in this photo is Hygeia. It was replaced in 1888 by a figure
carved by DW Stevenson.
