The Union Canal

Early Days

The Union Canal was opened in 1822.  This canal ran from Port Hopetoun, near the centre of Edinburgh, to Falkirk where it joined the Forth and Clyde Canal using a series of locks.

This link between the canals was lost for many decades, but has now been re-established through the creation of "The Falkirk Wheel" - a unique revolving boat link, which transports boats (and the water they are floating in) between the two canals.
