Institution for the Encouragement

Fine Arts

The Institution was founded on 1 February 1819 on the principle of the British Institution. 

Its original intention was to hang an annual exhibition of pictures of the old masters, but it subsequently also showed the work of living artists.

The Institution's first exhibition opened in York Place on 1 November 1819.
