Thank you to Jim Wilson who wrote:

Upper Grove Place

Workshops

"In 1949, I was serving my time as an apprentice electrician with St Cuthbert's Co-op Works Department at the bottom of  Upper Grove Place.

There was a large wooden door that led to a cobbled yard with three balcony landings:

-  The top one was the Painters' Workshop.

-   The the second one was the plumbers' Workshop.

-   On the right was the Electricians' Workshop and Stores.
There were
26 electricians and 6 apprentices.  One of the electricians, Peter Ferguson, was in a football team with Shaun Connery.  The team was Fetlorr (I'm not sure of the spelling.)

Blacksmith's Forge

"Further round, at ground level, was the old Blacksmith's Forge, where they shod the co-op store horses, Percherons.  They were bred at a co-op farm at Newbridge where i also did some work."
