Bus Accident

Recollections

Thank you to Ian Hamilton, who used to live at Arniston, Gorebridge, Midlothian, for telling me about a bus accident that he was involved in as a child in 1961.

Ian wrote:

Bus from Newbattle School

"In 1961 was travelling from Newbattle School to Gorebridge in a SMT double decker bus which was packed with kids.

On Crawlee Road, a back road between Newtongrange and Gorebridge, the bus fell over into a field.  My friend and I escaped through the roof miraculously there was no one injured.

I still remember the bus conductor running as fast as he could, with his hat falling off, to get help."

Newspaper Report of Accident

"I was only twelve at the time and remember seeing the bus on its side on the front page of a newspaper, can’t remember which one.  If that happened these days it would have been on the ITN news.

I would be very grateful if anybody could find this picture or the newspaper story."

Reply to Ian

Ian added that he has lived in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders since 1978, and that two of his friends who were in the bus accident have also moved to Galashiels.

If you'd like to reply to Ian's request above, please email me, then I'll pass on your message to him.

Thank you    -  Peter Stubbs, February 9, 2009
